This section reviews the main types of sources for historical study in the county under five periods of:
· Earliest History (Anglo-Saxon)
· Medieval (7th c.-1520)
· Early Modern (1520-1750)
· Modern (1750-1914)
· Recent (post-1914)
Some types of sources are available for more than one of these periods. The brief overview here cannot be exhaustive. A wide-ranging general guide to sources is W.B.Stephens, Sources for English Local History, Phillimore (1994).
